There are several reasons why officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Homeland Security (HSI), or other federal agencies may visit university property or otherwise request information about members of our community.

  • It is standard and routine procedure for U.S. government agencies to occasionally contact international students, scholars, employees, and visitors during their stay in the U.S.  If contacted, individuals on non-immigrant visas sponsored by Wake Forest University should reach out to the Center for Immigration Services and Support (ISS) (336-758-3739) for additional information and assistance.
  • For all other in-person inquiries by ICE, HSI, or other law enforcement officers who are not members of the WFU Police Department, please use the following protocol:
    • If the agent is in person in a WFU facility, building, classroom, or office, let the official know you need to notify a University official that they are on university property.
    • Immediately call the WFU Police Department at 336-758-5591.
    • Request that the non-WFU official wait in the hallway or other public space until a WFU police officer arrives.
    • If you’re asked to review any documents, state that you do not have the authority to review warrants or other legal documents.
    • Do not take it upon yourself to make any determinations as to the appropriateness of questions asked, and do not otherwise offer any information.
    • Remember that FERPA and other regulations guide our ability to share personally identifiable student information.
    • Suggested talking points include:
      • “I’m going to do my best to assist you.”
      • “I’m required to follow the University’s protocol to obtain approval to share information about our faculty, staff, or students with you.”
      • “University protocol also requires that Wake Forest University Police verify your credentials.”
      • “I am happy to escort you to a place where you can wait for Wake Forest University Police.”
  • For all other requests for information via phone or in writing, immediately contact the WFU Police Department (336-758-5991) or call 336-758-CARE. Do not provide any information via phone or in writing.

The WFU Police Department, in consultation with the University’s Legal Department, is responsible for reviewing any legal documents provided by any external law enforcement agencies and following the appropriate steps to engage with the official.
