Executive Order to Close the U.S. Department of Education
On March 20, an executive order (EO) was issued to close the U.S. Department of Education “to the maximum extent appropriate and permitted by law,” transferring education authority to states and local communities. According to a Department of Education news release, this change will not reduce funding for key programs supporting K-12 students, those with special needs, or federal student loan borrowers. However, the full impact of the decision remains under review.
Wake Forest’s response to the Executive Order:
Since its establishment in 1979, the U.S. Department of Education has played a vital role in ensuring student access to education. Wake Forest University is closely monitoring these developments to assess their implications for higher education and our students. We are actively engaging with policymakers, peer institutions, and advocacy groups to emphasize the importance of maintaining essential functions — particularly ensuring uninterrupted access to federal student aid for current and future students.
