Julia Jackson-Newsom (‘94)

Associate Vice President for Policy and Government Affairs

A North Carolina native, Julia Jackson-Newsom serves as the Associate Vice President for Policy and Government Affairs. She previously worked as Wake Forest’s Senior Advisor for Planning and Partnerships in the Office of the President.

Jackson-Newsom joined Wake Forest in August 2021 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she served as Associate Vice Chancellor for Strategy and Policy. In that role, she oversaw local, state, and federal relations.

A Wake Forest alumna, Jackson-Newsom double-majored in psychology and religion before earning a master’s and Ph.D. in human development and family studies from Pennsylvania State University. Her expertise in policy and strategy continues to shape her leadership in government affairs at Wake Forest.


Jimmy Broughton (’90)

Director of Government Affairs

Jimmy Broughton joined Wake Forest in 2017 and serves as the University’s Director of Government Affairs. In this role, he represents Wake Forest at both the federal and state levels as an in-house registered lobbyist.

With more than 15 years of experience in senior public policy roles on Capitol Hill and in Raleigh, Jimmy has an extensive background in government relations. Prior to joining Wake Forest, he was a member of the Government Relations Group at Womble Carlyle for a decade, representing a diverse range of clients in Washington and Raleigh.

A Raleigh native, Jimmy comes from a long line of Demon Deacons dating back to Wake Forest’s Old Campus. He has served as a board member for PBS North Carolina (by the UNC Board of Governors), the Board of the North Carolina Land and Water Fund (by Speaker Tim Moore), and the Executive Mansion Fine Arts Committee (by Governor Roy Cooper). He also serves as a Trustee of the Merrie-Woode and Helms Center Foundations.
